Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers
The bill requiring a uniform State-wide buffer of 1500 foot did not make it to the floor on Congress in 2008, BUT is expected to make it in 2009. It should have a good chance of passing-----Gov. Crist is supporting it. Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers lobbied for years just to get it into Committee.

ATSA was successful in changing the Sex Offender & Predator Registries to include the date of the incidentnot the arrest date ----. This is good. The public then knows how long ago the offense was committed

SORNA mandated registration for Juvenile Sex Offenders has come under scrutiny. Professionals working with this group share concerns that registration requirements for juveniles can have even harsher consequences for juveniles than the consequences adult offenders suffer. Registration for juveniles can severely undermine treatment efforts, foster negative self images for the youths and subject youths to redicule or mistreatment from the immature minds of their peers. Perhaps worst of all, being on the registry may be setting youths up to be victimized by adult offenders who are not only alerted by perusing the registry to the fact that a juvenile has abnormal sex issues, but gets the youths address as well. The Florida ATSA Board has created a forum to further address these concerns ands create an advocacy for this vulnerable population. FATSA is in the initial stages of attempting to define what path such advocacy may take. Currrently, FATSA is contributing to information that will be distributed to the school system outlining the realities of registration.
